Sacharov Prize: European Parliament and Human Rights

60 min.

The official opening of the exhibition ‘The Sakharov Prize, the European Parliament and Human Rights’

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is the highest tribute paid by the European Union to human rights work. It recognises individuals, groups, and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to protecting freedom of thought. It promotes in particular freedom of expression, the rights of minorities, respect for international law, the development of democracy, and the implementation of the rule of law. First awarded in 1988 to Nelson Mandela and Anatoli Marchenko, the prize was presented the following year to Alexander Dubček. It is named in honour of the Russian physicist and dissident Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921–1989), who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.

The exhibition is organised by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Slovakia, in cooperation with One World Film Festival.
